If you already have an aquarium and you want to know what breed of fish will fit it best or you have a fish in mind and want to know what the best size tank is, you have come to the right place. If you want you can scroll down and skip right ahead to the free formula to determine minimum tank size.
Picking the ideal size tank size for the breed of fish you have is necessary for several reasons:
1. You probably don't want the hassle and added expense of buying a new aquarium and all new equipment needed to move your fish.
2. It is cruel to allow a fish to outgrow it's aquarium. An undersized aquarium leads to restriction in movement, inability to turn around comfortably, inability to exercise, and discomfort from crowding just to name a few things.
3. An undersized tank leads to "Artifacts of Captivity" which detract from your fish's beauty such as: damaged eyes, bruised snouts and bent fins.
Tank footprint formula*: (The height isn't as important just make sure that it is more than twice the height of the fish in question)
ADD (TANK WIDTH IN INCHES) + (TANK LENGTH IN INCHES) AND THEN DIVIDE BY (ADULT FISH LENGTH IN INCHES)
IF THE NUMBER IS LOWER THAN 4 THE FISH WILL OUTGROW THE TANK
IF THE NUMBER IS BETWEEN 4 AND 6 THE FISH WILL BE SAFE TO SWIM
IF THE NUMBER IS ABOVE 6 THE FISH WILL THRIVE AND BE IN OPTIMAL SIZE CONDITIONS
OR YOU CAN USE THE LINK BELOW AND LET US CALCULATE IT FOR YOU. JUST CLICK THE LINK BELOW AND ENTER THE TANK'S FOOTPRINT AND THE ADULT FISH'S SIZE TO DETERMINE IF THE TANK IS BIG ENOUGH FOR YOUR FISH:
*exceptions to the formula include fish such as sharks and sturgeon because they need a larger swimming area with a minimum of an 8 value.
**tank width must be atleast 25% wider than the adult fish length
